Top Ten Tips for Healthy Sunbathing

Despite ongoing public awareness campaigns warning about the dangers of sunbathing, many people still like to get the healthy glow that a tan provides. Yet it?s important to remember that skin is extremely fragile, and overexposure to sun can cause skin cancer. For those determined to get a suntan, however, here are some skin care suggestions to make tanning more healthy.
Keep your skin type in mind at all times. If your skin burns easily, you need to take more precautions than a friend who is sharing a tanning session with you. Don?t let another person?s skin type or habits influence you.
Always use sunblock when tanning. The purpose of sunblock is to prevent burning, but you will still tan. Apply sunblock 30 minutes before going outside, and reapply at least once every two hours.
Use sunblock made specifically for the face, and with a higher SPF level. Facial skin is much more senstive so extra precaution is necessary.
Protect your eyes when tanning. Direct ultraviolet rays are harmful. Use small sunglasses or invest in some special eye protection goggles.
Check any medications you take to see if they increase the likelihood of sunburns.
Carefully plan a tanning regimen. Do not try to get an immediate dark tan since skin damage will definitely occur. Expose skin gradually to build up melanin and to avoid burns.
Take vitamin supplements to help prevent skin damage. For example, vitamins C, D, and E will help skin repair itself. Also, 30 mg. of beta-carotene daily also helps.
Invest in quality, dermatologist recommended skin care lotions to use after tanning sessions.
Tan between 10 a.m. and noon. This is the optimal time since afternoon sun has more infrared rays and is a lot hotter.
Shower before tanning to remove any lotions, makeup, or perfume chemicals that might increase the likelihood of burning, or which might cause a spotty appearance.
Healthy tanning practices will reduce excessive skin damage, and will also allow the body to use the sun?s rays to produce essential Vitamin D. Just remember, however, all things in moderation!
